Trailer

Plot summary

Doc Boyd and Dad Everett are wildcatters who run a fraud across Oklahoma and Texas during the Great Depression. They look for recently widowed landowners, offer to drill for oil without asking them to put up money, and sell shares in the well to other widows in the community. When it comes up dry, the pair are gone before anyone can complain. Chased out of Oklahoma, they choose Cornville, a small town in East Texas, for their next operation. There they court a group of widows with charm and scripture, promising a strike. The pair start drilling on property belonging to one of the widows, expecting the usual dry hole.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Miracle in East Texas (2019)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The real strike behind the film: on October 3, 1930, Joiner's third well, the Daisy Bradford No. 3, blew in as a gusher, defying expert predictions and triggering the East Texas oil boom, which swelled Kilgore's population from a few hundred to over 10,000 in days.
  • After Malcolm Crim drilled on his mother Lou Della Crim's land at Laird Hill, the Bateman-Crim Wildcat Well No. 1, also known as Lou Della Crim No. 1, blew in on December 28, 1930, just outside the front porch of the Lou Della Crim House, producing 20,000 barrels a day and confirming the field's extension into Kilgore.
  • Joiner was celebrated as the "father" of the East Texas field, but lawsuits from investors forced him to sell his leases, including the discovery well, to oil magnate H. L. Hunt for over $1 million, and he died in 1947 with very little of his fortune left.
  • The film's East Texas is actually Alberta: principal photography in the fall of 2017 was done in and around Calgary and Turner Valley, Canada, chosen for its natural landscapes and production incentives.
  • Director and star Kevin Sorbo said in an interview that the film was shot over 18 days, a brief schedule for a feature film.
