Plot summary

Stephen Neale is released from Lembridge Asylum and waits for a train to London. A charity fête run by the Mothers of Free Nations is under way nearby, and a palm reader, Mrs. Bellane, tells him to guess the weight of a cake in a contest. He wins it. People at the fête press him to hand the cake to a young blond man, and he refuses. In his train compartment, a blind passenger crumbles a slice of the cake.
