Plot summary

Jāņi is Latvia's traditional midsummer festival, also called St. John's Night, when families and friends build bonfires and drink together. A Latvian legend holds that on this night lovers, and anyone who wants to fall in love, can go into the woods to find a magic fern. Six separate stories take place during the national festivities, all of them in Latvia. One story belongs to Livia, a French woman who carries with her the ashes of her late husband. She means to scatter them at the Hill of Crosses, which lies in Lithuania, and she takes Latvia to be that country.
