Plot summary
In 1996 Los Angeles, Stevie is 13 and lives with his older brother Ian and their mother, Dabney. He rides past Motor Avenue Skateshop, watches the skateboarders gathered outside and comes back the next day. Ruben, a young skater, brings him around to the rest of the crew: Ray, Fuckshit and Fourth Grade. Stevie can barely skate but wants to copy their daredevil tricks and anti-social attitudes. Ray nicknames him Sunburn. Ruben grows resentful as Stevie is welcomed in. He tries a jump between two rooftops, falls and hurts his head, and shrugs off Dabney's alarm. He begins smoking, drinking and using marijuana.

- Jonah Hill and cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt shot Mid90s in a 4:3 aspect ratio to echo the look of VHS skate tapes, and used Super 16mm film stock to match the aesthetic of 1990s skate videos.
- The set recreated Hill's childhood: Stevie's room began with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles posters and was later changed to reflect his new individuality, and some cast members listened to 1990s songs on an iPod to learn the period.
- Although some members of the Mid90s cast were professional actors, Jonah Hill also used real-life skateboarders who had little acting history.
