Plot summary

Franklin Shepard writes music for the Broadway stage. He leaves that career behind, and he leaves the friends he has in New York behind as well, and he heads to Los Angeles to make films. His story is told in reverse: it opens with him at the top of his Hollywood success and travels back toward the earlier years, so the choices he made and the work that carried him there come into view after the fame does. A Broadway revival of the musical was recorded live at the Hudson Theatre in New York City, and that revival took a Tony Award.
