Plot summary
Maia Sanders raises her teenage daughter, Alex, on her own in Montreal. On Christmas Eve a delivery reaches them: notebooks, audiotapes and photographs that Maia sent from Beirut between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, to the friend who had moved to Paris to escape the civil war. Maia will not open the box or face what it holds. Alex starts going through it without telling her mother. The pages and recordings carry her into her mother's adolescence in Beirut during the Lebanese civil war, a world she moves through somewhere between what she imagines and what the material preserves.
