Plot summary
Brenda raises three children, Mike Jr., Lena, and Tosha, on a single income in Chicago. The plant that employs her and her friend Cheryl moves its business to Mexico, and Miss Mildred, who watches Lena at her daycare, will not keep the girl because Brenda has not paid. A letter then reports that the father Brenda never met has died, and his funeral will be held in Georgia. A basketball scout named Harry spots Mike Jr. at a game and visits the house; he asks Brenda out, but she walks away. Her ex, Mike Sr., turns down her plea for financial help. Brenda travels with her children to Senoia, Georgia, where she meets half-siblings she never knew she had, including Cora and Leroy Brown. The family welcomes them.
