Plot summary
The Pollock family lives in a flat in a London tower block. Mavis, the mother, is the only one working. Her husband Frank and their two grown sons, Colin and Mark, are on the dole. Mark, the outspoken older brother, scrounges money and drinks off his friends. Colin is extremely shy and cannot bring himself to act on his feelings for Hayley. Among Mark's friends is Coxy, a crude, impulsive skinhead. Mavis's sister Barbara and her husband John live in comfort in suburban Chigwell.

- During rehearsals in a factory in Homerton, Tim Roth was throwing a milk bottle around with Gary Oldman when Roth threw it up and it hit a fluorescent lighting strip. Mike Leigh saw Oldman's shaven head erupt into a thousand red blotches, and stitch marks from the accident are visible in the film.
- Mike Leigh drove Gary Oldman to hospital, where the blood-covered actor, still in his skinhead gear, told him, "For fuck's sake, tell 'em I'm an actor!" Leigh said Oldman could easily have lost his eyesight in the accident, and that he does not know to this day what he would have done had that happened.
