Plot summary
Mata Hari earns her living as an exotic dancer, and her standing in European high society gives her access to men of rank and influence. In the First World War, the intelligence services of Germany and France draw her into their work, and she supplies information without grasping at first what she is doing. The story follows a love triangle invented for the film: Georges Ladoux, a French intelligence officer, and Karl von Bayerling, his German counterpart and personal friend, find themselves on opposing sides once the war begins. Their conflict sets duty to a country against loyalty to a friend. Against them stands Dr. Elsbeth Schragmüller, a psychologist and senior German operative known as Fräulein Doktor.
