Plot summary
Mark Hogancamp is attacked outside a bar by five men after he tells them he is a cross-dresser. He spends nine days in a coma and forty days in the hospital, and comes home with brain damage and little memory of the life he had. With no money for therapy, he makes his own: a one-sixth-scale Belgian town of the World War II era, built in his yard, where he stages scenes and photographs them. He names the town Marwencol, a blend of Mark, Wendy and Colleen, and fills it with dolls standing in for his friends, his family and the men who beat him.
