Plot summary
A 25-year-old student in Paris, Gérard Morère attends a lecture about a treasure that Troilus is said to have lost in the sea after the Peloponnesian War. Five years earlier, while diving near Levezzi, an island off Corsica, he had found a fragment of a Phoenician amphora, and he believes he knows where the treasure lies. Friends and an innkeeper put up the money for his search, enough to carry him to Tangiers, where he persuades Éric, a cigarette smuggler, to take him to the island on his boat. Levezzi is the home of Manina, the light-keeper's daughter, who is eighteen.
