Plot summary
After years on the streets, Mamma Roma sees her pimp Carmine marry and takes the chance to leave prostitution. She buys a fruit stall in Rome and brings home Ettore, the son she left behind as an infant and who was raised in the country. She wants a respectable life for them both, and she presses a trattoria owner into hiring Ettore as a waiter. Ettore has little interest in work or study, and spends his days with friends who steal and with Bruna, a streetwalker. Mamma Roma tries to pull him away from both, even as the past she has buried threatens her plans.
