Plot summary

Sternkowitz lives on the first floor of an apartment complex whose elevator has stopped working, and he refuses to pay his share of the repair. Charly, a teenager whose mother is often away, spends most of his time alone until Jeanne Meyer moves into the flat next door; she once worked as an actress and has no roles now. At night Sternkowitz goes out to a hospital vending machine for food, where a night-shift nurse finds him. The astronaut John McKenzie comes down on the roof by mistake, and NASA asks Madame Hamida, an Algerian immigrant on the top floor, to keep him hidden for two days; she speaks no English and he no French.
