Plot summary
Syosset, Long Island, 1979. Fifteen-year-old Scott Bartlett is gentler than his blustery father Mickey and his mother Brenda, and an outbreak of Lyme disease and the paranoia around it have hit the neighborhood. Next door, Charlie Bragg is diagnosed and can no longer work, so his wife Melissa earns the family's keep by taking a job with Mickey. Mickey's philandering upsets Brenda. Scott has loved the Braggs' daughter Adrianna, a year older than he is, for as long as he can remember, and she is beginning to return his interest. Charlie keeps to the basement and hunts deer, and his wife believes the Manhattan trips are job interviews. Scott and Charlie get along well. Jimmy, the older brother, returns from the army on their mother's birthday.
