Plot summary
George Dyer, a small-time thief many years younger than the painter Francis Bacon, is caught breaking into Bacon's studio in the 1960s. Rather than call the police, Bacon propositions him: a night together, and in the morning Dyer may take whatever he wants from the apartment. Dyer agrees, and the arrangement turns into a lasting relationship. Bacon brings him to the pubs of Soho and into the company of his friends in the art world. Dyer grows curious about Bacon's painting and about the talk of its brutal and primitive side. The two men live together, though Bacon regards himself as free to see other companions. Depression, drinking, pills and nightmares put pressure on what holds them together.
