Plot summary
Bess Krafft, a young woman, shares a house with her mother, Carolyn, but she can neither see nor hear her. Carolyn registers as nothing at all in Bess's perception, no face and no voice, and Bess rejects the idea that her mother is present. The condition is a form of selective perception. A psychiatrist on the autism spectrum, described as eccentric, is treating Bess, and he gives her an assignment: she must spend time with a man named Russell, who has been suicidal for a long time. That assignment runs into the same wall, since Russell is as invisible to Bess as her mother is.
