Plot summary
Eddie Kurnitz's wife has died and left medical bills, so he takes a traveling sales job to pay them off. His sons Jay, fifteen, and Arty, thirteen, are sent from the Bronx to Yonkers to stay with his mother, Grandma Kurnitz, who runs a strict household and whose harsh rules have estranged her other children. Grandma at first refuses to take the boys in; their aunt Bella, who thinks and feels like a child though she is in her thirties, is glad to see them and stands up to her mother. When Bella mentions the fifteen thousand dollars Grandma keeps hidden around the house and her candy store, the boys begin searching for it, hoping to clear their father's debt. Their uncle Louie, a mobster, comes home to hide from a rival.
