Plot summary
Lord Longford has spent years as a prison visitor and campaigner for penal reform, and at the House of Lords he presides over a reception for former inmates he has visited and written to. He then receives a letter from Myra Hindley, who is serving life for her part in the Moors murders. He visits her; she asks for books and for help arranging a meeting with Ian Brady, her former partner, also serving life. Longford warns her that contact with Brady could damage any hope of parole, and she seems surprised that parole might ever be considered in her case. When the tabloids learn of the friendship, the reaction is fierce: politicians, the press and his own family object, and Prime Minister Harold Wilson strips him of his post as the government's leader in the Lords.

- By the time the film was made, both Longford and Hindley had died, Longford in August 2001 and Hindley in November 2002. Ian Brady, Hindley's lover and accomplice, was played by Andy Serkis and was still living when the film came out.
