Plot summary
In 1969, ten-year-old Frank Sears watches his mother Eleanore carve S3 V12 into his palms and warn him to remember, before she kills her husband and herself. In the present, Frank teaches biology and is haunted; an internet search brings him from New Jersey to Bennell, New Mexico, to visit the Army base Fort Lambert, where he is turned away and breaks through the gates. Detained, he tells Carrie Freeborn and her husband Glenn that his mother worked at the base and warned him something terrible was stored in Sublevel 3, Vault 12. Records show no trace of Eleanore and decontamination documents list the vault as empty, until a second check finds the back wall hollow and the team starts digging despite his warnings.
