Plot summary
On a winter day at a high school in southside Queens, Ken Knowles's history classroom is freezing, and Principal Allan Armstrong tells him to take the class anywhere. Knowles and his students end up at a diner, where a robbery takes place, and he confronts the robber, a former student who dropped out. Armstrong puts Knowles on administrative leave, and Stephanie Williams confronts him about it. Armstrong suspends Stephanie, Lester DeWitt, Zacharias 'Ziggy' Malone and Rivers and calls Officer Dante Jackson to remove them. Ziggy tries to leave and is restrained. Lester resists Jackson and loses; Ziggy picks up the officer's dropped pistol, and Jackson is shot in the leg. Lester takes the gun and orders the school evacuated.
