Plot summary
In the Prohibition-era South, thirteen-year-old Lila Lee sings in the church of the Reverend who raised her. A letter arrives saying her father, a gangster, is dying and wants her. Lila runs away and boards a bus to Astaroth, where the ticket seller warns that the townspeople are strange and few visitors come back. She is the only passenger when mindless vampires attack the bus in the woods near town; the driver is killed, and Lila crashes the vehicle. She wakes locked in a cottage outside a farmhouse, tended by an old woman named Solange. After she escapes, Lila hides in a crawlspace and hears her father's voice. Lemora keeps them apart, saying Lila must first be made immune to whatever ails him, and other children board in the house, pale and sickly like her.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Reverend's house in Lemora was filmed at Culver Studios, on what had once been part of the exterior set for Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show.
- The audience response at the film's April 30, 1973 premiere at Scripps College was allegedly so poor that Fern and Blackburn sold Lemora to Media Cinema Group, which cut it from 85 minutes to 80 and released it to drive-in theaters and local cinemas in December 1974.
