Plot summary
After fighting with Chinese soldiers alongside the Allies in France during World War I, Chen Zhen goes back to Shanghai and takes the name of his friend Qi Tianyuan, killed in action. There he joins an underground movement against an impending Japanese invasion, befriends Liu Yutian, who runs a nightclub where foreign dignitaries gather, and is drawn to Kiki, a singer at the club. Japanese agents move to kill General Zeng, a northern warlord's son, and to pin the deed on his rival General Zhuo. Dressed as a masked fighter, Chen saves Zeng from the attackers. Colonel Chikaraishi Takeshi, head of the Japanese spy agency in Shanghai, is sent a list of anti-Japanese activists to be killed and lets it circulate, and Chen sets out to save the people on it.

- Donnie Yen choreographed the fight scenes himself, working in nunchaku and the trademark screaming as a tribute to Bruce Lee, who played Chen Zhen in 1972's Fist of Fury. He also mixed MMA elements with Wing Chun.
- Donnie Yen publicly fell out with the film's distributors over the removal of about 10 minutes of non-fighting scenes, posting on his Sina Weibo that the film's overall gross would not exceed ¥200 million.
