Plot summary
Will, a veteran with PTSD, and his teenage daughter Tom live in Forest Park near Portland, Oregon, depending on survival skills and coming into town only for supplies. He brings in money by selling the benzodiazepines issued to him by the Veterans Health Administration to another homeless veteran. After a jogger spots Tom in the woods, park rangers arrest the two of them and social services detain them. Assessors find that Tom reads far beyond her years even though she has had no schooling. The pair move into a house in rural Oregon, on a farm that grows Christmas trees, where Will works packaging the trees. Tom meets a boy from the area who is putting up a tiny house of his own, and he brings her to the 4-H club. Social services keep checking on Will and Tom.
