Plot summary
A young writer, Erik, depends on his girlfriend, Joanna, and their relationship is close to breaking when the two fly to Thailand to repair what is left of it. They find themselves bitter and distant instead. Erik wanders the country on his own, struggling with loneliness and with the daily life he cannot manage by himself. Joanna runs into David, a friend from her childhood. Erik's path crosses those of Jamie, Cecile and Miranda, three backpackers traveling through the country. Between these separate journeys, the story cuts back to the couple's past life in New York, each flashback set further back in time, leading toward the moment they first met.
