Plot summary
Marcel Marx gave up his literary ambitions and lives in Le Havre, where he shines shoes for a small income and spends his time with his wife Arletty, his dog Laika and his local bar. When Arletty falls seriously ill and is hospitalized, a cargo container arrives in port carrying undocumented African immigrants, among them Idrissa, an underage boy who slips away from the group. The police and border guards search the city for him, and Marcel takes him in and hides him at home. Neighbors and other townspeople learn of the boy and help keep him out of sight, while Inspector Monet looks for him. Marcel also wants to send Idrissa on to London, the destination he started out for.
