Out in the Pacific, a volcanic island named Uku has no companion. The creatures around him have mates of their own. Ages pass while he keeps up his song, hoping to find one. It is a musical love story that spans millions of years, and other than the song, no words are spoken.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director James Ford Murphy got the story's idea at the wedding of his sister, who married at 43; there, thinking of the volcano Loihi, he had an epiphany wondering what if his sister were a volcano and volcanoes spent their lives searching for love.
- The face of Uku, the lonely volcano voiced by Kuana Torres Kahele, was designed as an amalgamation of the faces of Kahele, Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole, The Honeymooners star Jackie Gleason and the bulldog Marc Antony from Chuck Jones's animated short Feed the Kitty.
- James Ford Murphy was so touched by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" that he blended his fascination and love for Hawaii with his feeling for that song when creating the short.
