Plot summary
Chris Lemons, David Yuasa, and Duncan Allcock are saturation divers who maintain gas lines on the seabed of the North Sea. During a four-week rotation they live aboard a vessel in pressurized chambers and are lowered to depth in a diving bell. Lemons and Yuasa exit the bell to work on a manifold, while Allcock stays inside to monitor them and tend the umbilical lines that carry their breathing gas, communications and hot water. Heavy seas cause the vessel's dynamic positioning system to malfunction, and the ship loses its hold on position. The bell is pulled away with Allcock aboard. Lemons and Yuasa climb the manifold for safety, but Lemons' umbilical catches on the structure. Yuasa tells him to switch to his emergency air supply and promises to return, then the line parts and Yuasa is carried off.
