Plot summary
John Fok runs an illegal red diesel operation across Greater China. When an oil tanker explodes, police in Hong Kong and on the mainland make him the focus of an investigation, and he halts the business as his rivals move in. Senior Inspector Maureen Szeto is known for closing cases with cool precision, but after more than ten years with the same man and no wedding in sight, she decides to end the relationship before she is too old to have a child. She is assigned the kidnapping of John's only son. John sends his gang looking for the boy and finds his rivals moving people into China against him. When Maureen and her team arrive to seal off his house, he rejects her at first, then finds her reading of the situation useful.

- Problems with Mainland Chinese censors forced several scenes to be reshot, and a cut version of the film running 91 minutes was submitted to the TELA on 11 December and again passed with a Category IIB rating.
- When the script was finally completed, Mak felt uncomfortable with the concept of another male buddy film, so he and Chong decided the film would centre on a female police officer and immediately thought of Sammi Cheng to play the lead.
- Chong had the idea of casting Eason Chan while attending one of the singer's concerts in 2006, and during filming the two directors taught Chan to use a method of acting similar to Tony Leung Chiu-Wai's.
- Chong and Mak revealed that the suit Cheng wears in the film was custom-made and modelled after the suit Andy Lau wears in Infernal Affairs.
- Lady Cop & Papa Crook was Cheng's first feature-film role after a three-year absence from the Hong Kong cinema scene, her previous film being the 2005 film Everlasting Regret.
