Plot summary
The Grill is an upscale Times Square restaurant run by Rashid, and its kitchen sits underground, staffed by undocumented immigrants, most of them Latin American, who race through the rush hours filling orders carried in by waitresses. Rashid promises the cooks legal status and never acts on it. Estela, newly arrived and without English, starts at the restaurant because she knows Pedro, a hot-tempered Mexican cook. Pedro quarrels with Julia, a waitress, over their relationship, and some of the staff say he is with her only to get a visa. Julia is pregnant and wants an abortion; Pedro wants the child and pictures the two of them on a Mexican beach. When cash goes missing from a register, suspicion spreads through the kitchen.
