- La Chinoise is often grouped with Pierrot le fou, Masculin féminin, Two or Three Things I Know About Her and Week End as marking Jean-Luc Godard's decisive step away from 'bourgeois' narrative filmmaking; by 1968 he had moved into Maoist-collectivist didactic films with Jean-Pierre Gorin and the Dziga Vertov Group, a phase that lasted until 1973.
