Plot summary
The Mapuche, whom the Spanish colonizers called Araucanians, live in the historic region of Arauco, also named Wallmapu, in the south of Chile. Isabel's husband accidentally kills their son and then takes his own life, and she is left alone. She begins a long journey south through Chile, away from what she has lost and toward forgetfulness. In the land of the Mapuche she meets a Mapuche child, and the encounter brings her into the conflict of a culture that is not her own.
