Plot summary

Kumari marries Dhruvan and settles into the Kanjirangattu household, a land said to be cursed, beyond Illmayi in the west. Her uncles arranged the match; her brother Jayan opposed it. The household lives among mystery, myth and superstition, and its people are ruled by faith and sorcery, ready to give up their lives for tradition, prosperity and peace. Lakshmi, wife of Dhruvan's brother Achyuthan, warns her that the family must keep out of the forest, having earned the wrath of Chathan.
