Plot summary
When Bud Slocumb collapses at breakfast, his wife Raynelle brings the family together in the town of Lula for the wake and funeral. The family does not remember Bud fondly. Ray Bud is a recovering alcoholic whose relationship with his father was rocky. Lucille, Ray Bud's wife, takes care of everyone but cannot have the child she wants. Junior has no job after a failed invention, and his wife Charisse is angry about his cheating. Marguerite, a pious and overbearing mother, lectures her son Royce. Juanita arrives as the wife of a wealthy cousin.
