Plot summary
Shin Ichijo receives a locket from Louis Kisaragi, who tells him to attend a Prism Show by Over the Rainbow. The performance inspires Shin to become a Prism Star, an idol who performs figure skating routines with song and dance, and Hijiri Himuro scouts him to Edel Rose Academy as a trainee. There he meets his classmates and the three members of Over the Rainbow: Koji Mihama, Hiro Hayami and Kazuki Nishina. Edel Rose is left with only nine students, with much of its funding and many of its students gone to Schwarz Rose, the rival school run by Jin Norizuki. The students train for the Prism King Cup, a tournament held once every four years.

- King of Prism by Pretty Rhythm opened in just 14 theaters and was nearly pulled after its second week, but a third-week surge of word-of-mouth took it past 130 theaters nationwide; it ended up running for 238 days and selling about 460,000 tickets.
- King of Prism by Pretty Rhythm is credited with spearheading the "cheer screenings" movement in modern cinema, where fans returned to screenings several times and the atmosphere was compared to attending a live concert.
- Director Masakazu Hishida and staff members Hiroko Nishi and Takeshi Yoda first pitched a late-night 13-episode series about the Over the Rainbow characters, then a film; both plans were rejected, and they were told to prove the project would work.
- From 2014 the staff promoted Pretty Rhythm and PriPara series at events and occasionally teased an Over the Rainbow comeback to test fan reaction; when the full version of their theme song "Athletic Core" was well received, a character song album was made.
