Plot summary
Rico is nine when he and his mother, Erzulie, leave Haiti for a small town in Quebec in the mid-1970s. They move into the home of Albert and Cécile, an older couple who have no children. Mother and son have drifted apart since the move, and Rico wants his mother close to him again. To reach her, he tries to make sense of a country whose habits and customs are strange to him. Kana, a figure from Haitian mythology, keeps him company as his imaginary friend.
