Plot summary

Brian Kessler, who studies in Pittsburgh and writes journalism, has drawn a book offer with an article about serial killers. He and his girlfriend Carrie Laughlin, a photographer, intend to move to California and to stop along the way at notorious murder sites she can shoot for the project. Money is short, so Brian puts a ride-share notice up on the university campus. In Louisville, Kentucky, Early Grayce no longer has his job at a mirror factory, and his parole officer visits the trailer park he shares with Adele Corners to press him about a janitor's position at the university. Early spots the notice and calls Brian; they agree to meet the next day. Carrie dislikes the look of the couple, but Brian asks her to give them a chance.

  • Screenwriter Tim Metcalfe was fired from Kalifornia in March 1991 after clashing with director Dominic Sena and the producers over the script, and with no budget to hire a replacement, Sena and his two producers spent a year writing ten more drafts themselves.
  • Filming on Kalifornia was temporarily halted on June 28, 1992, when a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck while the crew was shooting at a gas station in rural California.
  • Screenwriter Tim Metcalfe said his original script, co-written with Stephen Levy, was meant as a dark comedy with Hitchcockian suspense, and accused director Dominic Sena of replacing it with gratuitous, cartoonish violence in the style of Quentin Tarantino.
  • Brad Pitt took the role of the killer Early Grayce because he wanted a part at odds with the wholesome "pretty boy" image he had built in Thelma & Louise and A River Runs Through It.
  • DC Comics commissioned a 32-page comic adaptation of Kalifornia from writer Chuck Dixon and artist Duncan Fegredo; it was never published despite completed coloring by Danny Vozzo, which Fegredo blamed on the demise of Gramercy Pictures.
  • Producer Steve Golin said the four leads worked ridiculous hours in conditions that were not star-like, with desert hotel rooms so basic they had only a swamp cooler and no air conditioning.
