Plot summary
In the Nerima ward of Tokyo, an illustrator named Takeo Saeki kills his wife Kayako in a jealous rage and abandons the family house. The anger and sorrow around the killing create a curse that turns those in the house into onryō, and it claims anyone who enters, along with anyone tied to a person who entered, spreading to wherever they die. Shunsuke Kobayashi, Toshio Saeki's elementary school teacher, notices the boy's repeated absence from his class and goes to the house while his pregnant wife Manami stays home. Toshio refuses to speak with him, so Kobayashi waits for the parents to appear.
