Plot summary
A civil war is being fought in an unnamed African country. Johnny Mad Dog, a teenager, commands a small group of boys younger than himself in a rebel faction. Their older commander, General Never Die, supplies them with cocaine, and Johnny has been fighting since he was ten. The boys wear odd outfits that include butterfly wings and a wedding dress, and they answer to names like No Good Advice, Captain Dust to Dust and Chicken Hair. Along the route toward the capital, the people they meet are terrified and often executed. Laokole, a girl about Johnny's age, is trying to keep her brother and her disabled father together.
