Plot summary
Paradise, Massachusetts, has a new police chief: William Butler, a councilman's son-in-law. Jesse Stone lost that post and is without full-time work, though he says he will be reinstated. He finds ways to keep working cases on his own, among them the death of a young friend he had lost touch with. The state police homicide division also brings him in as a consulting investigator on a robbery and murder. He and his friend Captain Healy both have doubts that the man accused in that case is guilty. Stone's dealings with Butler remain tense, and he still struggles with his former wife and with drinking.
