Plot summary
Thornfield Hall is the house where Jane Eyre comes to work as a governess, having grown up in bleak circumstances. She settles into the life of the household and is happy in her work there. The master of the house is Edward Rochester, a man whose manner is dark, cold and abrupt. Jane and her employer grow close, and a friendship forms between the two of them. Before long she is in love with him, and she thinks she may have found happiness at last. Rochester, though, keeps something hidden from her, and Jane does not know what it is.
