Plot summary
Danny Miller has spent four years in the army thinking about Brooklyn. On his last night overseas he meets Jamie Shellgrove, a shy young man whose grandfather wants someone to take him in hand, and Danny tells him that Brooklyn is what he needs. Back home, Danny finds the place less friendly than he remembered. Nick, the janitor at the high school he once attended, gives him a room, and Danny sings at a music store. There he gets to know Leo, a young pianist, and Anne, Leo's teacher, who wants a career in opera. Jamie arrives from England, and Danny shows him Brooklyn and helps him write swing music. The four of them set out to help Leo win the Brooklyn Music scholarship.

- Kathryn Grayson is heard singing "The Bell Song" from Delibes's opera Lakme, lip-synching to a pre-recorded audio track; André Previn wrote that the finished soundtrack was the result of over 150 edited intercuts, so almost every squeak comes from a different take.
- Shooting on the film was interrupted for roughly ten days because Jimmy Durante, who plays Nick Lombardi, had to go and finish filming This Time for Keeps.
- Johnny O'Brien was played by child actor Bobby Long, the stage name of Bobby Earl Logsdon, and it was the only feature film appearance of his career; he had been discovered on the Major Bowes show and toured the country as a young performer.
