Plot summary
Racine and Anaia are twin sisters marked by a fire from their childhood: Racine's left arm is scarred, Anaia's face and chest. Their father set that fire, and they have long believed their mother died in it. Then a letter arrives from her. The sisters drive across the country to the deathbed of the woman Racine calls God, who explains that she gave them up to foster care and describes what their father did to her the night of the fire. She asks them to kill him so that she can die in peace. When they hesitate, her aides lift the sheets to show the injuries she carries, and Racine agrees.
