Plot summary

The 2016 presidential election results leave Democratic campaign consultant Gary Zimmer in despair. A viral video comes to his attention: retired Marine colonel Jack Hastings speaking in support of the immigrant population of Deerlaken, Wisconsin. Zimmer calculates that a Democratic win in the town's upcoming mayoral election could help his party with heartland voters, so he travels to Wisconsin to make his pitch. Hastings, who considers himself more of a conservative and has no real interest in politics, declines at first, then agrees to run on the condition that Zimmer serve as his campaign manager. Friends and neighbors join as volunteers, and Zimmer meets a culture far from Washington, D.C. Setbacks soon arise: limited Wi-Fi, social conservatism, xenophobia, incumbent mayor Braun's funding from the Republican National Committee, and Faith Brewster, Zimmer's nemesis, sent to counter him.
