Plot summary
The Heartbreaker tells the Heartbroken Woman over the telephone that their relationship is over, to her great sorrow. What follows is her dream, staged among a tall metal girder, the abandoned shell of a car, flickering lights and harsh sounds. The Dreamself of the Heartbroken Woman floats above a wasteland of industry, singing ballads of love, while dancers and figures suspended from ropes fly and fall around her. The Woodsman saws a log, The Tall Skinned Deer joins the ensemble, and the opening conversation is repeated with a clarinet soloist and a silent actress. Snare drummers and backup singers also appear, and dolls are lowered from the roof on strings.
