Plot summary
Fluke Kelso, a British professor of Soviet history, is in Moscow for a conference. His lecture is interrupted by members of Aurora, a hardline Communist faction. An elderly man, Papu Rapava, tells him that in 1953 he escorted Lavrentiy Beria to Stalin's deathbed, where Beria took a key, opened Stalin's private safe and removed a notebook, which Rapava then buried in Beria's yard. Kelso decides to look for it. A librarian sends him to Beria's former home, and when he puts questions to Vladimir Mamantov, the politician who leads Aurora, Suvorin, a major in the FSB, puts him under surveillance. The toolbox is gone from Beria's derelict mansion.
