Plot summary
Won-joo and her mother Park Sook are staying in a town on the coast, Mohang, where they hope their creditors will not find them. To steady herself, Won-joo begins writing a screenplay that uses the place where they are staying as its setting, and works out three versions of one story. Each version follows a French visitor named Anne, who takes a room at the small hotel and is helped and shown around by the young woman whose parents own it. Anne also walks the beach, where she looks for a mini-lighthouse and meets a lifeguard who patrols the sand.

- Isabelle Huppert was cast in In Another Country after Hong Sang-soo, drinking makgeolli with her at a Seoul restaurant, said he was about to start a new film with nothing decided and casually asked if she would be in it; she answered yes without a second's hesitation.
- Huppert traveled to the beach town of Mohang, South Korea, during a very rainy period to shoot a project that had no script; she said Hong Sang-soo starts with the place, finds the people and only then writes the script.
- Huppert said the cast and crew all spoke Korean and English was the only language she could speak with them, which added to the strangeness; she was alone in Korea and called it a very intimate shoot.
