Plot summary
The sprinter Carl Lewis is the subject of a portrait. In track and field he is remembered as the greatest, and he became the first athlete in the sport to be a commercially global star. He collected nine Olympic gold medals at four Games along with World Championship titles, and the International Olympic Committee named him Sportsman of the Century. His life away from the spotlight is often misunderstood. Lewis went his own way, unwilling to meet what the United States wanted from its athletes, and he would not be put in one category. That refusal brought change in the sport and beyond it, and his uncompromising drive brought consequences that the portrait examines.
