Plot summary
In Meda the Cantoni family has decided that the younger son, Franco, will continue his studies, so Domenico travels into Milan as one of the young applicants invited to sit a large corporation's entrance examinations. Aspirants like him take written tests and physical exercises, and answer a psychologist's questions, in the hope of a job that would support the family and last a lifetime. During a break Domenico meets Antonietta Masetti, who left school to earn money for herself and her mother; over coffee they talk about their ambitions. The company hires them both but assigns them to separate departments, and Domenico is told that no clerical posts are open. He accepts a messenger's job in the meantime, instructed by employee Sartori.
