Plot summary
The Ick, a plant-like parasite that has spread across Eastbrook, broke Hank Wallace's leg during a football game and ended his chances of leaving town. His girlfriend Staci took up with their classmate Ted. Years later Hank teaches science at the high school, Ted and Staci are married, and Ted sells real estate. Hank buys a run-down bar from the couple and begins to wonder whether their daughter Grace, one of his students, is his own child; he plans a paternity test on a saliva sample Grace turned in for a class assignment. When the Ick attacks him at night, the UV light therapy mask he is wearing halts it, and he works out that the growth only advances in darkness and stalls in ultraviolet light.
