Plot summary
Marc Jarry, president of a fictional Western state, is assassinated as his second six-year term is about to begin. A commission modeled on the Warren Commission is charged with investigating the killing. Henri Volney, a state attorney who sits on it, will not agree to its final findings. By the commission's own rule, the member who dissents from the conclusion is the one who must carry out a new investigation. Volney sets to work with his staff and turns up discrepancies in the official account of the assassination. In this fictional country the capital is built of modern blocks, and French, German, English and Spanish are all spoken.
